Complying with law requirements is essential for utility platforms, especially when it comes to sustainability and energy usage. This is true for the majority of states of the US although it might vary slightly depending on the size of the company and of the buildings they are energy providers for. EnergyCAP® software helps building managers and owners manage their energy portfolios and comply with energy requirements.

UNDERSTANDING BUSINESS PROBLEMS AND OUTCOMES

With this project, we are solving trust and informational issues, related to the clients of the utility platforms that will start submitting their data to EnergyCAP. These people, who in the end are our final users, are probably not aware of the law requirements, and they need to understand why they are required to facilitate personal energy use data.

Sharing personal data is a sensitive matter, especially in the age we are living. People are willing to sign up for a new service that makes their lifestyle better— or easier — and that grabs a vast amount of data without them noticing, but they can be reluctant to share required small pieces of information when it comes to government and institutions.

The business problem is that utility platform companies are required by law to keep their energy portfolios up to date, but the end users (i.e., tenants) can decline this data request. This would put the company between a rock and a hard place when it comes to reporting and complying with the law.

The main business outcome is that users will be willing to share their data because they trust the source and they understand the importance of this process from a law and sustainability perspective.

The requirement is to build a landing page that utility companies can use to solve the business problem and achieve the expected outcome. The layout must be dynamic and adapt to different utility companies because EnergyCAP® plans to use the same landing page for all the B2B clients.

research & institutional communication

Due to the nature of the landing page, the first steps I took into this project were related to understanding the must-have information, the law itself and how the government-dedicated website was communicating to companies and final users. This landing page lives in an institutional environment and the communication must be accessible and easily discoverable for all types of users, from outsiders to matter experts.

After the comparative research and the content analysis, we defined the main blocks of information and list useful external resources that would help users to dig into details if needed.

In close collaboration with the UX specialist and the design manager, we were able to identify 3 main concepts to start building wireframes and designs:

  1. The landing page should focus on the content and avoid unnecessary elements or illustrations. Users should understand the process and their role in it. The landing page should explain what the law is, why it is important, how it affects users, and what they need to do to comply with it.

  1. The landing page should highlight the value of EnergyCAP and provide easy access to the application. EnergyCAP is a tool that helps users measure and optimise their energy consumption. The landing page should showcase how EnergyCAP can help users save money, reduce emissions, and improve their energy performance.

  1. Branding, text and links should be customisable for each project with minimal effort from the engineers. The landing page needs to be treated as a template because we'll need to adapt it to any utility company that requires this service. It should be able to accommodate different logos, colours, fonts, slogans, and contact information.

Design

minimal and meaningful

The vast majority of the audience for this project are matter experts, sustainability managers, and building owners. From past experiences working with this type of public, we know that the communication and general structure must be easy to scan and straight to the point because most of them are highly busy and the digital environment in which they usually work is concise and professional.

While iterating on the structure layout and the design details, my focus has been related to the three main points detailed above:

  • Content-driven, avoid unnecessary elements

  • Highlight EnergyCAP value and provide easy access to the application

  • Low-effort maintenance to adapt content quickly
